Not necessarily, but you should ask your mate what the family gift-giving policy is. Some large families do a "Secret Santa" in which each person buys one person one gift that costs, say, $50. What if you're stuck buying gifts for everyone? Make it easy on yourself by getting the same thing for all the adults (try a bottle of wine personalized with labels with the family name and date) and one idea for the kids (think yummy oversized cookies). Regardless, always bring a hostess gift (a seasonal plant or designer candle).
