Q.
My mother-in-law insists I don't have to help with anything, but does she mean it?
A.

There's a 99.99999% chance she doesn't mean it. We're not suggesting you clear the table, load the dishwasher, and polish the silver. However, you can offer to take on minor tasks like filling the water pitcher. Or just tell her you aren't comfortable sitting around and try to create a job like setting the table. Just don't step on any toes, that is, if your sister-in-law is all about putting the marshmallows on the sweet potato pie, then leave that to her.
