Decor Q&A: Crown Molding?

 

How do we install crown molding?




Who needs a contractor when we can guide you through the installation step-by-step? Your bedroom (or any room) will be transformed in no time. Here’s all you need to know:

Step 1: Gather and locate. We’re assuming you've measured the room, bought the correct number of precut lengths of molding, and painted them the color/finish of your choice. Now you need to locate and lightly mark the wall studs. They'll usually be either 16 or 24 inches apart, although the placement of windows and doors can throw off the numbers. If you don’t have a stud finder, find them by rapping on the wall and listening for the solid sound of the studs (as opposed to the hollow noise you get from just the drywall).

Step 2: Mark and drill. Mark the molding where the studs line up and drill through each spot (you’ll want to drill the molding on a separate surface to prevent drilling through the wall). Then nail each molding into the wall.

Step 3. Polish and paint. Use wood putty or a filler stick to hide nail holes. It may be necessary to apply a bead of caulk where the molding meets the ceiling to close any gaps. Touch up any raw edges with a light coat of paint or finish.
