How to Arrange Flowers

Here's how to look like you've got a florist on speed dial.

Rules of Arrangement

  • Cut stems individually at an angle with flower clippers or a sharp knife, or smash one inch off the bottom of woody stems (like hydrangeas) with a mallet to create a larger water-absorbing surface.
  • Keep flowers in place by inserting chicken wire inside your vase (cut slightly larger than the container’s opening) and position flowers in a crisscross pattern. Hold wire in place with florist’s tape. If the greenery doesn’t hide the wire, wrap the inside of the vase with moss.
  • Florist’s foam can also hold flowers in place. Start at the center, angling stems into the foam.
  • When combining different size blooms, alternate sizes. Turn the vase as you work to cover the circumference first.
  • Mix five seasonal flowers in the same hue: big-headed blooms (hydrangeas); medium-headed (roses); and small-headed (freesias).
  • Looking for an easy flower fix? Arrange one or two blooms in each of five bud vases or bottles and line them up in a row.
  • For a couple-friendly look, avoid overly girlie flowers like pink rosebuds, sweet pea, or baby’s breath. Instead, try something like sunflowers in an antique garden urn.
