Love Q&A: Do We Have to Invite His Brother-in-law?

My brother-in-law and his wife invite us any time they go out. We love them, but we don’t want to reciprocate the blanket group invite. Is that wrong?

It’s perfectly okay if you don’t invite them to crash your plans, and really, you shouldn’t, since you don’t want to develop a reputation for always adding people to the group. Although your brother-in-law and his wife might feel a bit offended the first few times you do this, they’ll get over it as long as you continue to put in plenty of time with them otherwise. It’s important that you draw such family boundaries early on in your marriage, since the longer you wait to do so, the more awkward it will feel when you finally get around to it.
