Love Q&A: Nosy Mother-in-law?

Q.

My mother-in-law always asks me how much stuff costs -- our furniture, my clothes...everything. I don't want her to know too much about our finances. What do I do?

A.

Although it’s certainly not polite of your MIL to ask so many money questions, keep in mind that she may not see it as being out of line. And remember, all families are different; in hers, it might be completely appropriate to ask about finances. Breezily blow off her questions about money matters. After a few vague answers like, “I don’t remember,” “Not much!” or even “More than I’d like to admit!”, she should get the hint that you don’t like talking prices and, hopefully, cease her one-woman rendition of The Price Is Right.
