I started doing pilates in March and have lost about 4 inches overall and 3 more pounds. I love it, it really shaped my waist.

by astrila on Jul 17, 2009

I bought my zumba dvd's because I have heard only good reviews about "Zumba"....any more reviews???

by gigichaparra on Jul 21, 2009

I read somewhere that the BMI index was actually invented over a hundred years and was only supposed to measure the weight of the people in Scandinavia of that time period.

by ahaan108 on Dec 03, 2009

I heard when Tom Cruise was filming his Samari movie, he bulked up so much that he was considered "obese" on the BMI scale because of all his muscle mass. This tool isn't really reliable if you tend to weight train because it only looks at weight and hieght and not body fat percentage.

by mrs.fletcher on Dec 04, 2009

Well I'm a size 6 I have a hard time believing I'm overweight even though I'm five feet and weigh 129lbs I'm muscle packed I lift weights. So don't put a lot of weight in this.

by CAS on Dec 19, 2009

We offer Zumba at the YMCA that I work at and it has been a huge hit! I've take the class when I have time and absolutely love it! It's not like your regular aerobics class.

by jcm3rcury@aol.com on Dec 19, 2009

You know, the fact that I'm twenty years old and have a 17.6 on the BMI calculator upset me. I'm 5 ft. 1 in. tall and 93 lbs. No matter how much I eat (whole pizza, seriously) I just lose weight. I take thyroid medicine because they thought that was why, but I'm not sure.

by Kayla_Kitten on Dec 28, 2009

@ Gigichaparra...I took a Zumba class at the YMCA this last fall and it was great! I highly recommend it to anyone that wants to lose a little weight, but doesn't really like to "work out"

by CheryllynnS10 on Dec 31, 2009

Shouldn't BMI calculations include bone type (fine, heavy) and male/female?

by susansullivan59 on Jan 13, 2010

Nicknack, I've been wanting to try pilates. It sounds like it really helped you, but how did you stay motivated? Did you do classes or on your own?

by wcpierce86 on Jan 13, 2010

if anyone is looking for a good workout without the gym try jillian michaels dvd.. I believe she has three- 30 day shred (awesome 20 min workout!)Fight Fat Boost Metabolism ( SO hard but very rewarding!) and trouble Zones ( more of an inbetween between 30 day shred and Fight Fat!) My mom is 43 and has lost 20 pounds by doing these videos.. I am 20 and just had a baby and starting them as well.. its not ab out being skinny its about taking control of your life!!!

by emilyhickman on Jan 25, 2010

I am sooooo busy, how can I feet in exercise without taking time to exercise? Yikes Im overweight!

by MissEssence on Jan 27, 2010

Zumba is a GREAT way to get your cardio in and to lose weight. I recommend taking it at a workout center in a class format.

by erdoig on Jan 27, 2010

Well at least I'm making my way out of the obese category and on to overweight. In no time i will be back to normal thanks to my trainer at the gym, my improved running skills, my yoga/pilates/thi chi class and The Biggest Looser.

by slschmied on Jan 28, 2010

@susansullivan59 - BMI calculations should also include your activity level. This BMI calculator shows the numbers for men and women. Contributing to it's lack of 100% accuracy. A more accurate form of measuring would be to calculate your total body fat using the Pinch Test. Most gyms have the tools for this if they offer personal trainers. Another reason BMI is not accurate is it's lack of accounting for amount of exercise and type of exercise. Be wary of your results. If you are concerned, talk to your doctor or a nutritionist. @hlp2709 - Cardio, cardio, cardio. It's important in any weight loss regimen. Biking, rowing, and walking are good alternatives. The best workout is swimming though. It's a total body workout and easier on your joints. Exercise alone though will not make you lose weight, a healthy diet of a variety of foods must be included, too.

by AmyD916 on Feb 02, 2010

I think that you have to take BMI calculators with a grain of salt. As much as people want to say that there is a standard weight everyone of a certain height should be, it's just too idealistic. Different body shapes and frames can play a hand in your healthiest weight, even if it's not considered within the "normal" BMI range.

by JenniYeah918 on Feb 09, 2010

@hlp2709: you should try the elliptical cross-trainer. It gives you a great cardio exercise without the muscle strain. Or try swimming, which is wonderful. Or try the exercise shoes by MBT (ps, have found other brands are not nearly as good). Or try yoga, pilates, cycling! There are so many great ways to have fun staying in shape. running is not the only way - and in fact it's good for very few people given how out of shape most are and how their bones/cartilage/etc settle into poor posture/carriage that then contribute to running injuries when they try to take it up late in life.

by madtopper on Feb 10, 2010

I hop on the eliptical for 30 minutes 4 times a week. Doing that and eating healthy...I've actually lost 54 pounds in 9 months. I'm 135 now and feeling GREAT! :)

by es78692 on Feb 11, 2010

by es78692 on Feb 11, 2010

I Don't Think this works for everybody, specially "latinos" this is because our physical constitution is different. We ten to have larger hip-bones or thicker bone, so I'm in 160 and I am 5' 3" and I dont look fat. In fact, I have big breasts, small waist, and large hips. And DH and I deffinitely don't think I am overweight.

by cindy.oquendo on Feb 17, 2010

Gigichaparra, I have the zumba tapes and they are great! I really recommend them. If you enjoy dancing, then this is a great workout.

by Ashley1017 on Feb 25, 2010

Zumba is high impact, for me I tried it and it killed my knees and my weak ankles! It's a great Cardio tool, but isnt for everyone.

by cutiepie0104 on Mar 03, 2010

You can definately use this on men too, it works for all people. The the healthy BMI ranges though might change depending on your age and physiological state. But as long as your under 65 years old the above ranges apply to all!

by saraawija on Mar 06, 2010

I used to weigh 187 pounds last May. This past year I quit drinking sugary drinks everyday and began drinking a lot of water and I am now 147. I have another 15-20 pounds left but I gotta work for those now lol.

by missjess2687 on Mar 11, 2010

This is good information to know.

by mnlee on Mar 12, 2010

this is in no way accurate! it doesnt take into account your muscle, since muscle weighs more than fat! come on girls!

by strikeuhpose on Mar 14, 2010

I think BMI caculators are not all that accurate. They only take weight and height into consideration. Muscle/fat percentage is not shown. You could be 120 pounds and be all fat which is not good or 175 and all muscle, but the BMI says that you are overweight. Idk ... just a thought.

by lizgarrett12 on Mar 16, 2010

If you don't like to run or do lots of cardio but dont mind lifting weights then that's perfect! Lifting weights is what burns fat :) cardio only burns the calories you consume, but so do your everyday tasks as long as you aren't over consuming your calories then you're good to go!!

by spang19 on Apr 28, 2010

i agree with nicknack :) i love pilates too... it is not as tiring but you just won't stop sweating. plus the breathing calms you down just like yoga & meditating :)

by foreverflipflopsgirl on May 08, 2010

I really thought i had no other way and lost all hope to losing weight.. but then i heard about the wii fit and wii active. i love doing the active as a workout and the fit as a fun family and friend game on the weekends. you don't even relize your working out till you see the scale drop lb by lb each day!

by johnrose26 on May 12, 2010

@hlp2709 - Cardio of any kind will really help, anything that increases your heart rate for a sustained period of time (20min-1hr). If you don't like running try swimming, biking, walking at an incline on the treadmill, the elliptical machine or fitness classes at your local gym.

by mjone28 on May 24, 2010

I would like to see a BMI calculator for men as well...

by destination09 on Jun 01, 2010

I discovered that my blood pressure would go up as my weight went up. Even though the BMI for me is still within the "normal" range at 155, when I was at 145, my blood pressure would be above it's normal limits. Interestingly enough, when I was at 135 or even 140, my bp was normal.I don't go by their BMI to judge when I'm packing on too much weight, I go by the blood pressure gague.

by Oblivia82 on Jun 13, 2010

i've got some work to do since my BMI is currently saying im overweight, is walkin and some aerobics good enough?

by nikkih2410 on Jun 14, 2010

It's important to know that things like this are simply "rules of thumb," and will vary from person to person. If your number seems to indicate that you are overweight but you happen to know that you are fit, don't stress! Your lifestyle is more important than your weight-to-height ratio. But if you can see some chunk on your gut and your idea of exercise is walking :into: Taco Bell instead of using the drive thru, then seeing a high BMI should let you know that things need to change.

by gwennykate on Jun 17, 2010

There is a great plan complete with shopping list and menu's for the week. it's called: The Cardio Free Diet What's great is that it works and you don't have to take tons of time to run. CURVES is also a great option for busy women. 30 minutes 3 days a week and you get cardio and strength in an all female atmosphere. Wonderful1

by LaurasoontobeZ on Jul 19, 2010

i started early morning (5:30) yoga practice to start my week days, and i absolutely love it. definitely lost fat without even meaning to!

by AbbyJean on Aug 19, 2010

You must Zumba "live" the DVD"s aren't the same. I've did zumba for a year straight (stopped 3 months before the wedding b/c no time) lost a ton of weight and enjoyed every second of it. During hte 3 months I stopped the live class, i tried the DVD's and it just wasn't the same. Find a class and join the party you will love it!

I did Weight Watchers for 15 weeks and lost 25+ pounds! After that I got pregnant...gained the baby weight...and used what I knew from Weight Watchers as well as nursing and got back down so far to 3 pounds over my pre pregnancy weight! I feel great. W.W. teaches you a LOT and if you stick with it...2 years later...it still helps!

by sbkinnie on Sep 20, 2010

I love Zumba!! I havent been in a while, but I felt good and I loved it!!

by MorrisGirl on Sep 22, 2010

This is the most inaccurate way to check your fitness/health level. Muscle weighs more than fat. To get an accurate BMI rating you have to do the pinch test or the water test. This is just completely misleading.

by Jxlpsu on Sep 22, 2010

I am restricted to no-impact exercise and my weight has shot up. I can do what I can with proper diet but does anyone have any ideas for no-impact exercise besides stationary bike, swimming, pilates and weights. I am frankly just bored with the limited options.

My BMI says that i am "normal" but in my eyes i see something much larger! how do i change that?

by emachy10 on Oct 26, 2010

I teach and practice yoga. I highly recommend the practice, especially for those who don't particularly like to work out. It not only creates strength and flexibility, it also lengthens and tones. It is hands down the only exercise I have ever done that I have been able to achieve the results I wanted. Not only that, it creates a sense of well being, calmness, and compassion towards yourself. :)

by bethybjj2 on Oct 29, 2010

For me this wasn't particularly helpful. I typed in my height (5'8) and my weight(205) and it says that I'm obese.LOL. I find that funny because looking at me you know I'm not obese, overweight, yes, obese no. I've started back to working out but when I'm a "normal" weight I look anorexic. Guess most of my weight is muscle.

by alishavirginia on Oct 31, 2010

I am trying to get on the elliptical more, but I can't afford a gym. The apartments i live in have a small fitness room though. Does anyone have an tips for getting motivated? I keep telling myself I'm not going to eat my feelings today, but sure enough, 2 McRib sandwiches at mcdonald's for lunch!

by smlygrl182lotr on Nov 03, 2010

I love Zumba!

by Mlikota1 on Nov 03, 2010

I feel that this is not accurate. BMI doesn't take into account muscle mass or bone structue. I have a large bone structure and if I weighed what it wanted me to weigh people would think there was something wrong with me. Just saying.

by JULIEWB on Nov 08, 2010

I lead a VERY busy life right now, with a full time job, part time graduate school, and I just got married, so last year was all about the wedding planning...and through it all (with not so much emphasis on exercise) I lost 40lbs on Weight Watchers! I LOVE it and even was able to do a WW friendly Thanksgiving...didn't miss all the fat AT ALL!!! Stick with it - it is totally worth it to wear a bikini (and look good) at the honeymoon!!!

by HeatherAA10 on Nov 26, 2010

this method is good for an overall idea but if you carry weight in odd places, such as a large toosh or bust, it is far from accurate. The best method involves a large pool and displacing water but you can use the 'tape' or calipers to determine your truest BMI. I dont know the exact specifications but google has rarely failed me.

by horlandi on Jan 26, 2011

I've sat on the couch and all that for months, but recently I have been trying to get myself onto a schedule. Today I've been planning out my exercise plan. I am thinking that just by getting off the couch and walking through the apartment building (all three floors of it) should bring my BMI down. If anyone has any other simple suggestions please message me or contact me at foalborn@yahoo.com

by katlovesninja on Mar 04, 2011

for anyone who would rather work out at home, i'd highly recommend the Nike Training Club app off of iTunes. it's designed specifically for women and has four main areas to choose from: get lean, get strong, get toned and get focused. all have beginner, intermediate and advanced levels and vary between 30-45 minutes. you can set the workouts to a specific playlist if you'd like and they take you step by step throughout the each exercise. it's a really great workout!

by laurag579 on Apr 17, 2011

by Gloria1986 on Apr 23, 2011

i wish i had a place to exercise or a buddy to do it with. I try to eat healthy but never time to work it out.

by beautilu1 on Apr 27, 2011

A more accurate calculation is the Waist-Hip Ratio (WHR) since carrying weight around the trunk of the body is strongly correlated with health problems. The measurement is done by measuring around the natural waist (above the belly button) and dividing that number by the measurement around the widest part of the hips. A healthy WHR for women is 0.7 and the healthy WHR for men is 0.9.

by behrenwaldk on Apr 30, 2011

I'm 5'2", Asian, and weigh 90lbs. This says I am underweight, but I don't think it takes into account bone mass. I'm assuming I'm underweight because I'm lazy and don't work out anymore. I still eat like a pig, and count my calories to make sure I'm eating more than 2,200 calories a day. My peak weight was 98lbs, and I had to lift weights like crazy to put on the muscle mass.

by wailinvision on May 06, 2011

I've been simply reducing the size of each serving I consume (it was AMAZING -in a bad way- how much I was over consuming without even realizing it) along with eating healthier foods by cooking at home (which also saves us a ton of money) and by choosing foods smarter like whole weat, etc and cutting out cokes and sweet tea. Etc I also now bike at least an hour a day (and my bike isn't even that great) and before I knew it, I just completed at 16 mile trip!!!! I don't count calories and I prett much eat what I want, I just try to be smarter about it. So far I have lost at least 15 pounds and I have been steadily loosing 2 pounds a week!

by kln85 on May 13, 2011

I am 5'10" and usually fluxuate between 140-143 and this says I am on the low side of normal. Makes me feel better, but I still feel like I am fat! I eat A LOT, not that unhealthy, and I work out a lil, but I am a curvy woman. Wish I felt "normal" rather than overweight.

Biking, rollerskating, walking (this one takes a little longer than the others), aerobics, dancing, swimming, sex, yoga (it made me look a lot thinner with out actually being thinner), and a lot of yard work are great ways to loose weight. The best way depends on what you enjoy the most because if you like it you'll do it more. Also, most BMI calculators don't take into account muscle mass or bone size. Its basically for the tiny framed and flabby.

Although the BMI formula for adults and children is the same, the way the results are interpreted differ. Therefore, what is considered a healthy BMI also differs. 2011 christmas gifts For adults, an ideal BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9. A person with a BMI over 24.9 is considered overweight. All women have fat days, and most women struggle with their weight at one time or another. Additionally, there is a great deal of societal pressure on women to be as thin as possible, whether it's healthy or not. Despite its flaws, BMI is still a reasonably good way to determine a healthy weight range for most women, but it is not a hard and fast rule. If you are above the normal BMI range but you are not over-fat and you are happy with the way you look, don't sweat it. For health purposes, it is far more important to maintain a reasonable body fat percentage and hip-to-waist ratio. Acronis true image home SugarSync Review

BMI is really a very bad measurement of idea body composition. Someone who packs on muscle and becomes very strong will have a lot of weight compared to their height though they are the idea picture of health. You need to find body fat percentage for real info. Not with those unreliable electrical scales or hand-held yoke gizmos either. You need to visit someplace with a personal trainer (like LA Fitness or 24 Hour Fitness) and get measured with skin-pinch calipers
