How to use Wii to work out

Video games are no longer just for couch potatoes. Here’s how to perfect the Wii workout so you can slim down while having fun.

Use a balance board. To get the most from many of the games, including boxing, the balance board is essential. It creates more of a resistance and engages more of your body, giving you more of an effective workout.

Don’t cheat. Here’s a rule of thumb when it comes to Wii workouts: If something feels too easy, it probably is. Resist the urge of the easy win by making sure you’re balancing not with your feet and calves, but rather utilizing your abs and core. Also, you might be able to get by performing some of the yoga poses incorrectly, but getting to the next level isn’t as important as getting a killer workout. If you aren’t sure you’re doing the moves right, read the instructions a second time.

Push yourself. To really get the best workout you can, you have to go the extra mile -- even if the game doesn’t recognize it. For instance, in Wii tennis, you’re only responsible for moving your wrist or arm and “hitting” the ball. Instead of putting in the minimal amount of effort, really get into the game and lunge, jump, swing. You’re workout will actually work your body, rather than just one part of it.

Branch out. You might fall in love with one particular Wii workout, but be sure to change up your routine once in a while by actually going outdoors (no, you won’t need the remote). Varying up how you get your exercise will keep you interested, and meeting new people through a sport or fitness center can help motivate you to work out even more.
