The most important thing when buying an ottoman is that it's in direct proportion to whatever seat it'll be used with. Form definitely needs to follow function in this area.
Go bold If you have a neutral room or one with a lot of solid colors, an ottoman is a great way to add a shot of color or pattern. Save money by either getting a less-expensive ottoman in a crazier print or investing in a more-expensive neutral ottoman and all sorts of different slipcovers. Either way, this will let you change up your living room look when you feel like it or when the seasons change.
An ottoman doesn't just have to be a footrest. One great way to double up its function is by putting a great tray on it and using it as a coffee table. (Finding the right-size ottoman can be a lot easier than finding that perfect coffee table.) If you're choosing an ottoman with this in mind, make sure you've got the proportions right when you're shopping.
Now find out how to buy a couch.
