How to Fake a Clean Home in 30 Minutes!

clean home in 30 minutes

Do you have company coming over? No time to whip your house into tip top shape? No problem! Check out these quick and simple tips to get a clean home in 30 minutes.

Declutter (4 minutes)

Pass through key rooms, picking up the following:
Catalogs, bills, and newspapers
Pets’ toys
Handbags and shoes
Sports equipment
Stray DVDs

Wipe Down (10 minutes)

Spray an all-purpose cleaner on your kitchen countertop and wipe away grime.
Remove fingerprints from stainless steel surfaces using a glass cleaner.
Wipe down the dining table (if you have hardwood, just remove dust with a damp rag or microfiber cloth).
Spray the bathroom sink, vanity, and counters with an all-purpose disinfectant.
Wipe down the outer edge of the tub (it’s something all guests will see) and pull the curtain or shower door closed.
Clean the mirror with vinegar and wipe with newsprint (it works).
Spritz all outside surfaces of the toilet with disinfectant before moving inside.
Lift the toilet seat lid and spray cleaner on the top and bottom, then squeeze bowl cleaner under the rim. Scrub under the rim and inside the bowl. Flush.

Swiff (5 minutes)

Swiff your coffee table after spraying it with an all-purpose cleaner. Next, swiff the TV (including screen), entertainment center, frames and collectibles. Then swiff the floors in the kitchen, living room, and bathroom.

Empty (2 minutes)

Clear out the sink and put dishes into the dishwasher.
Empty the wastepaper basket.
Take out the trash.

Restock (4 minutes)

Put out fresh hand towels, a box of tissues, extra TP, air freshener, and soap.
Do a chair count and haul out the extras.
Replenish your table with fresh placemats if there are stains on the current set.
Fill the napkin holder.

Display (4 minutes)

Take out serving dishes and wine glasses (check for smudge spots).
Fluff and arrange throw pillows and couch cushions.
Make an instant centerpiece by throwing fruit into a decorative bowl.
Dim the lights and light candles. Nothing hides cleaning imperfections better.
Put on your game face. People are at the door!

Air fresheners are a must. They can quickly change the mood of the room and have that just cleaned smell.

by skitty on Jan 01, 2009

Taking small rugs outside and giving them a shake is a big one for me! Its like an instant vacumed look (as long as you don't look to close).

by KnoxBride2b on Jan 16, 2009

#1 is totally the most important. Just picking up magazines, bills, paper, shoes, cups, etc can make a world of difference.

by LeahRust on Mar 23, 2009

One thing that we always do, along with most of the stuff above - and shaking the rugs - is VACUUM! Oh my, it does make the most difference because it just makes it look fresh. Something else I just started doing, I bought a great lavendar spray at Bath & Body Works, so I spray a squirt on the couch and around the apartment. Not too much so it's not overpowering, it makes it feel more home-like.

by jdmiller28 on May 12, 2009

Take a Laundry basket and place all items that don't belong in it's place. As you walk around you will find the place for the items already in the basket. Also, place a couple garbage bags in the bottom of the canister, it saves time when taking out the trash for the new bags are right there.

If you have any type of flat screen TV use a microfiber cleaning cloth to clean the screen. The regular swiffer cloths, rags or dusters will scratch the screen over time.

The best thing to do is take a day in the weekend and plan on cleaning the whole house. For example the kitchen, bathroom, etc. Listen to music while cleaning or watch T.V. too, that way it is not too boring. Ever sincve my husband and I got back from our honeymoon, I've been fixing our apartment little by little each day. That way there is not too much to do.

by mariedavid27 on Aug 28, 2009

We have a small apartment so dirt on the carpet accumlates fast (more condensed traffic areas)! I borrow a friend's carpet cleaner about twice a year. That makes a HUGE difference in the feel and look of the carpet.

by redtyrrell on Nov 01, 2009

My big tip for a house that smells freshly cleaned is to buy the carpet powder that you shake on your carpet and then vacuum up. Do this task when you have free time some day - pick a scent you like, sprinkle it all over, then vacuum up. THEN when you have to do a quick clean for surprise guests, yank out the vacuum and vacuum just one line down a hallway and a couple lines into your living room. The scent of the leftover powder comes right out and it smells like your house is super fresh (plus a couple vacuum lines in the carpet make it look like you've done a full vacuuming job when you really only did a couple lines!)

Love it!

by dnwhite on Mar 22, 2010

I never use air fresheners. I am allergic to perfume (as are quite a lot of people) and synthetic scents are toxic, so I have a hard time being in environments where they are used. I can't even walk in front of a Bath and Body Works because it makes me feel nauseous. Try opening the windows if it's a nice day or lighting a naturally scented soy or beeswax candle. Candlelight is always nice.

Clearing out the clutter is the best way to make your home look neater in a jiffy!! ;)

by melodeestarr7 on Apr 29, 2010

This is a great little cheat sheet, if you don't have a kid! This would be perfect for me Pre-3yr old. But when you have a terror of a toddler running around it takes 20 minutes just to fix all the things that've been attacked by the child. Still helpful tho

by liony38 on May 01, 2010

I have 2 dogs. To air out the house, I open the windows while I clean, Fabreeze throws and pillows and light a soy candle to absorb any additional odor.

by chinita88 on May 12, 2010

This is exactly what I did the other day when my mother in law was coming over. But I did one extra and that was spot clean the kitchen floor. Dont want her to think I cant keep a good house or take care of her son! :)

by ladie_sia on Jul 12, 2010

wow...this is what i do all the time! is that bad?? lol

by adelle88 on Oct 01, 2010

Why fake? I love cleaning the house! I've got all the mops, miele bags and detergents organized and maybe you will call me a freak, but I really love it!!!

by Partizannka on Oct 01, 2010

Love the advice but u should really ad vacume with a sprinkle powder that has baking soda and a sent.

by rbrians on Oct 03, 2010

I don't know about the rest of you, but it takes me more than 5 minutes to swiffer/sweep my kitchen, living room, and bathroom. I just like to make sure surfaces are clear and clean and pick up anything on the floor and vacuum the main room.

by Future.Mrs.Carter on Oct 05, 2010

Swiff? Am I the only one not familiar with that word? What is that?

by asheskayp on Dec 31, 2010

This would take me more than 20 minutes. Especially for a house that is very big. But very helpful. I tend to dump all the things I collected around the house in a room and shut the door to put away later.

by Ibliss on Feb 23, 2011

Great list, with a few exceptions: (1) "Swiff" is not a word, it's a brand. Also known as...DUSTING! (2) This would take me at least an hour in our 2500 sq ft house with multiple kids, bathrooms, etc. (3) Don't use air fresheners or fake stuff for cleaning/freshening. Yuck! Very TOXIC! Use natural things like real flowers, potted houseplants, and open windows.

by notthebride123 on Mar 14, 2011

"Empty" takes 2 minutes? Yeah, right. I can't get the trash bag out of the garbage can in two minutes, let alone walk it outside. Don't get me started on how long it takes to fill the dishwasher ...

by cryan06 on Mar 14, 2011

Nice list, but it would take me AT LEAST an hour to do everything on that list, more likely 2... Only thing I'd definitely skip is the air freshener. I'm highly allergic to perfume (lots of people are) and I actually avoid visiting friends who use air fresheners as being in a house with air fresheners limits my breathing and gives me a terrible rash.

by ValerieF79 on Mar 14, 2011

Oh this is good stuff!

by melipasos on Mar 14, 2011

I definitely have to vacuum and spot mop. and to air out my house I open the front and back door that way my house airs out. I also have a baby who always has toys all over the living room and i just put a bin in the living room and put all of his little toys in it. Cleans everything fast. Another another little thing i do to add to a fresh house is cut of few roses off of my rose bushes. so pretty and they smell good too :)

by sparklenshine_89 on Apr 06, 2011

Awesome! Can't wait to try that vinegar/newspaper trick :)

by Julsie15 on May 04, 2011

A bed that is made makes a room look nicer as well. An empty sink also makes a kitchen appear cleaner.

by Blessed06 on May 05, 2011

take a laundry fabric sheet and stick it under things where it wont be noticed and you can smell it for miles!

by flbeachbabe312 on May 19, 2011

I live in South Mississippi, and opening the windows is not always a pleasant option (It gets so hot!) But I love the soy candle and flowers idea to naturally give the house a fresh feeling. Also, the carpet powder really does work wonders.

by kjcrosswhite on Jun 14, 2011

I should of vacuumed today it takes like 5 mins

by iloveu4ever on Jun 20, 2011

I agree with those who say it takes more time than that! Also, I don't see how it's considered "fake" cleaning. If you are picking stuff up, dusting, loading the dishwasher, taking out the trash, and wiping down the kitchen and bathrooms, is that not cleaning? That's stuff I do WHEN I clean...

by mstar284 on Jul 19, 2011

..This sounds great, but I feel like most of this stuff would take a lot more time than it says to complete unless there were 2 people doing each task.. Also, I am in a small, newlywed apartment so I don't have a dishwasher or space for a large (or cute) drying rack. I guess I just have to plan ahead!

by ayasser on Aug 10, 2011

im just curious. i am out of the furniture polish and hardwood stuff. what can i use on my floors and tables that wont damage it?

by meganwiegers2012 on Aug 16, 2011

I love all the ideas but honestly 30 mins for all of this???

by Spoiledfairy16 on Sep 14, 2011

This would definitely take LONGER than 30 minutes!

by ceinwyn48 on Sep 15, 2011

a better way is make a good habit, do it just now. maybe you would like to buy some T8 LED tubes.

by superzhou on Oct 20, 2011

Ah for me, this would take much longer than 30mins!

by JHart264 on Oct 21, 2011

I love this list! I am such a procrastinator so this list is perfect!

by EricaAmerica on Nov 04, 2011

Now I know what to do when I have surprise guests who are about to turn up at my house. One way to make the house more inviting is to also turn on the lights, as it immediately gives off a more inviting feel.
