Cleaning Q&A: Grease Stain?

Q.

I dropped a slice of pizza on my favorite placemat. How do I get the grease out?

A.

Try this trick: Saturate the greasy stain with grease-removing dish soap, let it set for an hour, then wash in hot water. Still not out? You might need to blot it with a bit more soap and a soft-bristled toothbrush. The bristles help break up stains and can also help get stain-removing cleaning solutions deeper into the fabric. Don’t rub it back and forth like you’re brushing your teeth, though -- hold the toothbrush with your index finger behind the head, and use short, light taps. Another hint: If your placemat is white, you can't go wrong with the Clorox Bleach Pen. Just dot it on the stain, let it sit for a minute, rinse it out, and your placemat will be bright white again.
