Dressing Your Thanksgiving Table: Part 1

T-minus six days 'til Turkey day. Time (for me) to start thinking about the holiday. So while most people are rolling up their sleeves to mash the potatoes and stuff the bird, I’m preparing to roll the pinecones and sprinkle the leaves. In glitter, of course. Setting the table. Yep, that's my job.

Here’s the Turkey Day division of labor: My parents’ host the gang of 30. My mom prepares it all: from the antipasto to the apple pie. (We party Italian-style with apps, soup, ravioli and then the bird and trimmings. My brother breaks out the DVDs for the under age five contingency and babyproofs the house.

Me? I get table duty. The mission: Make the table(s) look different from the year before. Sidenote: my biggest (and loudest) critics are showing up for dinner.

This year I’m all over the place with palette and DIY details. (Check out the items I'm working with. Please note these are only a glimpse into my decorating madness.) Oh, yeah, and this is only part one. Stay tuned for Monday when I throw even more elements onto the tablescape.

Got any ideas for me? Send them before Thursday. And if you’re hosting…show your tables off. I’ll share mine, too.

Real Couple Home Tour: Sabrina & Julian

Home Buying Help – Money Management Tools – Home Decorating Ideas – Free Recipes

Take a peek inside Sabrina and Julian's mod San Francisco Victorian.

Where do you live?
"In a three-bedroom, three-bath home in the Glen Park neighborhood of San Francisco."

What's your style?
"I created a custom letterpress and stationery company called Hello!Lucky with my sister, Eunice. When it comes to my home and my business, I get inspired by everything from travel to local flea markets.”

What were you looking for in a home?
“Julian and I love modern architecture, but all of the contemporary places we saw were too cold," says Sabrina. "We also like the vintage look of Victorians, but everything was too dark inside.”

How did you know this was the one?
They stumbled upon this charming Victorian while house-surfing online, and it had everything they wanted—a cozy yet open floor plan and really nice light. The clincher? “The front door was painted red, which is good luck in Chinese culture,” says Sabrina. “That sealed the deal.”

Get Ready for Weekend Guests

Visitors crashing at your place this weekend? Time to get the spare room (or the office soon-to-be-turned spare room) ready. No need to be the hostess with the mostest. Well, not when you can fake it with these tips.

Make the bed Is it really that much to ask for a comfy resting spot? Besides, no one needs to deal with cranky guests who got a rotten night’s sleep. If you’ve got a sagging mattress, then add on a feather bed topper. Trust us, it’ll make a difference.

Lay on a rug We’re not asking for wall-to-wall carpeting. Is it too much to wanna treat feet to something soft around the bed area?

Add a light No overhead lighting? No problemo. But bring in a bedside lamp. Come on, stubbed toes are unacceptable parting gifts.

Bring in extra seating Pull in a comfy seat (from another room obviously) for late-night or early morning chillin’. Plus it’ll make a nice spot for draping clothes. Unless of course, you’ve got extra closet space to spare.

Stack up on good reads Okay, we’re not talking about propping up copies of Dickens and Joyce all over the room. But at least have the newspaper or some magazines around. (Note: Try and make sure they are close-to-current.)

Toss on the blankets Too hot? Too cold? Too much to worry about it. Rather than stressing over climate control, leave some blankets at the edge of the bed. (Play it safe and avoid wool or down; no one can be held accountable for allergies.)

Pimp the bathroom We really mean: Sample sizes are key. Stock up on shampoo, conditioner, hand soap, and toothpaste.
