Bedding Basics

Want to create a gender-neutral bedroom? Start with a bed frame that has both masculine and feminine appeal, like this West Elm bed with a square cutout headboard. To achieve a unisex look, substitute floral designs with neutral-colored patterns and bold colors, like the ones on this duvet set from DwellStudio.

Actually, I think some of those choices are quite feminine, like the duvet on slide 1 or the pillow on slide 4.

by Truelife135 on Dec 02, 2009

Honestly, I think all of these tips are very feminine... I need some better ideas about how to incorporate a "guy's guy" style into our Master Bedroom without everything being masculine...???

by shorttee77 on Sep 27, 2010

If it's in a dark or bold color, he'll let you get away with a few flowers or swirls. But I find that my man's not as demanding of a "masculine" room since I always pampered myself, and had very nice bedroom stuff. He donated his comforter and sheets when he moved in with me; I didn't say one word - he just did it.

by windchick on Sep 28, 2010

see with our room i had same issue but what i did was i got a reversible comforter and one side is tribaly black n white and the other side is tribaly hot pink and white and the sheets r white our walls are gray and i think it makes a good mix for a girl guy room and the pillows are all blacks grays n whites

by jaymissb on Oct 06, 2010

Ok, who's hubby is going to like this because my hubby does not.

by jadeorchid21 on Oct 07, 2010

I'm lucky in this area! My husband picked out our comforter...and there are flowers on it! :D

by disguiseofrevel on Oct 10, 2010

My hubby and I have totally different ideas for most decorating, but we found we both like a bit of antique look going on. Took a while but we found bedroom things that we both liked and stuck to neutral colors. This article assumes we all (men and women) like burnt orange, too...heheh...yuck. :) Find a common interest and play it up!

by freckles040683 on Nov 02, 2010

i think these are too femine. we want something femine but manly at the same time.

by foreverandalways011511 on Nov 03, 2010

for one, that bedroom is huge, we dont have room or random chairs. and two my husband would never go for burnt orange or yellow sheets/blankets

by vrodriguez45 on Nov 12, 2010

My bedding was patchwork blue and my husbands was...non existent. Despite having pretty great style and taste, he literally just had sheets and blanket on his bed until we got married. Mine bedding won, but it's not really girly at all.

by KNiemi on Nov 29, 2010

I bought checked eau de nil comforter and bed linen in the same colour. Walls are painted in the same colour and curtains are in dark green colour. On my site there are always flowers in hot pink for my girly soul and on his site is a chair in navy. That is compromise we did and it works for us...

by micikamala on Nov 30, 2010

The colors are too bright , maybe some blues and gray would be more of a compromise

by CARLINE1027 on Jan 06, 2011

My hubby would hate this. Too bright. Our room is wild bamboo (a yellowish color) with sage green and sky blue accents. We're working on getting furniture that all matches, but will probably go with espresso colored wood. Oh, and our comforter is white with a delicate flower print (also in white) that you can't really see until you're up close.

by Bttrflygurl007@yahoo.com on Jan 13, 2011

I think this is easier solved by using a solid colored sheet and solid neutral comforter. Use bedding that feels so soft you can't live without it. Stick to a color scheme that you can both agree on, and use pops of color and prints on throw pillows. Also, these throw pillows are easily exchangeable for the seasons (dark/fall versus light/spring) if your bedding is neutral. It really changes the look of a room for a low cost. You can go the extra mile and change the curtains too!

by MLBourdeau319 on Jan 27, 2011

I definitely think this look is leaning feminine but it's masculine enough that my boyfriend won't complain. It's a fine line!

by Julsie15 on Mar 09, 2011

Pinstripes are a good way to add color and satisfy both genders. Or, keep it extremely neutral like the second link and add color with your sheets and pillows.(hint: wait until these go on sale because they can become expensive.) http://www.potterybarn.com/products/vintage-ticking-stripet-duvet-cover-sham-neutral/?pkey=cwhats-new-bedding http://www.potterybarn.com/products/cameron-organic-matelasse-duvet-cover-sham-natural/?pkey=corganic-duvet-covers-shams

hmmm well i liked none of it i think it was as ugly and distasteful ewwwwwewwweeewewwewewwwwwww

by colez328 on Mar 17, 2011

I think if you don't look at the pictures this makes sense. the pictures are slightly off because they are so bright and have a more feminine quality. I find that when you have white walls or nutral color walls with one shade of furniture, the bed spread is all that matters. So go shopping together. Pick out something you both like. Who knows? You're hubby may love that bright colored spread with abstract flowers on it? Maybe you'll like the basic dark blue and white striped duvet cover!? Just try it. Plus it's more "us" time!

by agranvold on Apr 07, 2011

You could also pick a theme. My husband and I went with a nautical theme when picking bed linens.

by cde004 on May 18, 2011

This is really feminine. I'm thinking of a dark navy/indigo blue theme for our room. I find dark colours to be more relaxing anyway. Who can relax with bright orange? I want to use white or silver as an accent colour. I haven't started looking yet but I bet I could find a lamp base in stainless steel, to bring in the silver/metallic look.

by little_cupcake on May 27, 2011

I completely agree with all the other comments, not very relaxing colors, and not very husband approved either, would prefer to go in the grays and beige combo super elegant and chic!

This issue is very important to me, because I know how hard it is to make both partners happy. The bedding collections in the bryan keith line are contemporary, stylish designs that please both genders. Women are always writing to us saying how their husbands love the set they've picked out. And sometimes men write in too, saying that they're glad they found a set their wife loves that is still masculine. Take a look for yourself, at our images and bedding on facebook or bryankeithdesign.com http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002643063724&sk=photos

by bryankeithdesign on Jul 18, 2011

My wife and I couldn't agree on bedding because everything she found was very feminine, and she has high standards for everything being organic. I finally decided if I was ever going to sleep on a bed that didn't feel like a flower bed I was going to have to do it myself. I found some great stuff from a company called Coyuchi, and a website that would ship it for free, which was http://www.edenhome.com/c-591-organic-duvet-covers.aspx . The new bedding has turned our great, I was really amazed at how soft it was.

PLEASE HELP!!!! My boyfriend and I are trying to pick out bedding and of course we cant agree on anything. The problem is I dont have a job so its not my money we are spending. My bf just bought an amazing new house so we have been trying to get stuff together but its hard when you have a guy that doesnt really want to compromise...

by rhscutie16 on Nov 21, 2011

Anyways we cant agree on bedding and color scheme for the master bedroom so I was wondering if anyone has any ideas for different color schemes that might work for our bedding that we will both like. Everything he picks is just tooooo masculine!

Thanks for the great tips, I wish I’d seen the article before I redecorated my bedroom. Apparently I failed because my husband doesn't like it. I wanted to surprise him and did it while he was away, now I have to do it all over again. He says it is ok and that we should leave it this way but I know he doesn't like it and I'm not happy with that. Anyway, it's the bathroom's turn to be redecorated. I've seen some awesome bathroom vanity cabinets that I want to try. I will let him take care of it this time.

I really did not like anything about this room. It seemed kind of 70's throw back to me.
