How to Create Symmetry in a Room

Symmetry adds sophistication, balance, and a sense of calm to any space. Here's how to get it.

Top decorators love to use pairs to make a room feel polished and put together. Great news! This trick is easy to master. Here are a few tips.

  • When you find an end table or a lamp that you like, always buy two. On its own, an Ikea table lamp may look cheap, but paired with another on a console, you've got a totally chic look.
  • Extend a space (and create oodles of depth) by pairing twin mirrors on opposite walls.
  • Flank a pair of dining chairs on either side of a sideboard against the wall of your front hall. Not only does it look glamorous and grown up, but they will provide extra seating for dinner parties.
