Contemporary design style is all about playing with texture and lines. Leather is also big, but not in a matchy-matchy way. High-gloss paint is also a sure sign of contemporary interior, but not semigloss -- high-gloss.
Look for key sculptural pieces to add drama to your room; this is where less is really more. Invest in a few grown-up items that you'll keep a long time, and then decorate the rest with fun, cheap, trendy items like funky modern chairs in a red lacquer or with boldly patterned pillows.
