How to Nail Urban

Quick and easy ways to achieve that urban look.

Photo: Mark Lund

Urban interior design can exist anywhere, not just in cities. Weathered brick walls and exposed ceilings scream urban design, but if your place doesn’t come equipped with those, stainless steel is another easy way to get the same sleek, downtown vibe. Plus, you can find it pretty much anywhere.

You can also get the look with original artwork. Urban design often has a cosmopolitan vibe, and artwork is a way to achieve that look. Don’t start freaking out about the expense -- starving artist sales, where college students put their work up for purchase, are the perfect places to get one-of-a-kind pieces at great prices.

If artwork isn’t your thing, go for photographs. Take a risk and blow up a favorite photo to a huge size, or turn it into wallpaper for a focal wall at the top or bottom of a staircase. Use black and white photography to add even more of an urban touch.
