How to Start a Fire

Want the sparks? Here's how to get 'em going.

Step 1: Crumple up about 10 pieces of newspaper and set them beneath the firSteplace grate.

Step 2: Place four or five pieces of kindling on the crumpled paper.

Step 3: Lay down your fuel logs. Create a formation that looks kinda like the letter H.

Step 4: Use a match and light the paper in a few spots.

Step 5: Got a blaze going? Go on—top off the pile with a few more logs.

Step 6: Keep going. Continue adding logs as the fire tapers off.
