The Nest Q&A

I’ve got antique furniture that I want to refinish. It’s painted white now; how can I strip the paint off?

A.

Very green of you to want to repurpose something you already have. To get the old paint off, Lou Manfredini, Ace Hardware’s home improvement expert, recommends using a mild chemical stripping agent that has low fumes. His favorite: Citrus Strip. You brush on the solution, and allow it to penetrate the paint surface. Once it starts to bubble (in about 30 minutes), use a scraper and wire brush to remove the paint film. Repeat as necessary. Then wipe down the furniture with a rag and mineral spirits, sand and stain or paint.
