How to Avoid Freezer Burn

Photo: Krystina Castella

What causes dreaded freezer burn? Air. To ward off the culprit, use freezer-safe plastic wrap, bags or containers that allow you to squeeze out every last bit of air before storing food in your icebox. We love the BPA-free freezer-, microwave- and dishwasher-safe storage containers from Kinderville.

3 Steps to Prepping Your Icebox

1. Get to know your freezer's temperature. A basic fridge/freezer thermometer (you can pick one up for less than $10) will make it easy. The ideal temp for preserving frozen food? Around 0 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Gather labeling supplies (masking tape and a Sharpie work just fine). You'll want to clearly label what each item is and when it was frozen before you pop it into the freezer.

3. Freezers work better when full, so pack it up, leaving just a little room for air to circulate. Keep in mind: Unfrozen food will lower the temp inside, so try not to pack everything in on the same day.
