How to Find a Good Basting Brush

Don't know what a basting brush is or how to pick the best one? We've got you covered.

What’s a basting brush?

It’s kind of like a paint brush and is used to spread liquid on your food (often meat) while you’re cooking to keep it moist.

Which basting brush do you need? Georgia-based chef Joe Randall prefers dishwasher safe silicone. (Unlike nylon- and boar-bristle brushes, silicone won’t shed.) Go for a basting brush that’s angled, heat resistant, and has a 13 to 14 inch handle. Also, be sure the head can be removed, so you can wash out sticky sauce that gets stuck at the seam of the brush base. (A silicone pastry brush will work fine too.)

Nestpert: Chef Joe Randall is owner of Chef Joe Randall’s Cooking School in Savannah, Georgia, and author of A Taste of Heritage, a clear and comprehensive collection of traditional and contemporary African-American recipes.
