How to Handle Fish

Intimidated by fresh fish? We've got you covered.

Sure, figuring out fresh fish is a little more complicated than, say, throwing fish sticks onto a cookie sheet. But just barely. Follow these easy steps to find out just how easy it can be.

1. If you’re dealing with a fresh, locally grown fish, it can probably last for about two days after you pick it up at the market. If it’s been shipped in, though, try to limit it to a day.

2. Not ready to fry it up yet? You can extend the life of your fresh fish by putting it in the freezer -– for best results, wrap it twice in plastic wrap to avoid freezer burn. Then, seal it in a zip-top plastic bag taking care to remove any excess air. The more protection, the better!

3. Fish will last for about a month in the freezer. When you’re ready to defrost, the best method is to let it thaw naturally overnight in the fridge. If you have shrimp, though, they can be defrosted in a bowl of cold water.
