How to Prepare a Cake Pan

Set your cakes up for success with these tips.

With a few extra minutes of prep, you can take your baked goods from yummy (but messy) to worthy of a bakery window. Read on to learn how.

1. Start with a clean, dry pan. Give it a good scrubbing to get rid of any leftover build up. Make sure it doesn’t have any dents or burn marks, which can make the cake stick.

2. Spray the pan generously with a vegetable or cooking spray, making sure to coat the bottom and all four sides. For cupcakes, spray the pan before you put the liners in.

3. Lightly pour in about a tablespoon of flour. Carefully shake it around to cover the inside of the pan. Shake out any excess.

4. As an extra step, you can also trace the bottom of your pan onto a piece of parchment paper. Then cut along the line and place it in the bottom. When the cake is done cooling, flip the cake over and peel off the parchment.
