How to Steam

Not only is steaming a calorie-conscious way to cook (there’s no oil to add extra fat), but it’s actually very nutritious -- steaming meat and veggies helps them retain their nutrients better, as well as their color, texture, and flavor. All it takes is a pot with a steamer or colander. Here’s how to do it.

Your setup:
A big pot filled partway with water and a steamer basket or a colander on top. There should be enough water so that it barely skims the bottom of the basket or colander. (If you want to add flavor to meat, put veggies in the water or use broth instead.)

1. Bring the water to a boil, and then add to the colander whatever meat or veggies you’re cooking. With meat, pieces should not touch each other at all.

2. Use a loose-fitting lid, so some steam can escape.

3. Steam until done (see below) and then serve.

How long to steam for?
It varies depending on what you’re cooking and how you like it done, but the general rule is 1 to 7 minutes for leafy greens, 4 to 8 minutes for solid veggies, and 10 to 15 minutes for meats. You can always lift the lid and sneak a bite or cut into your meat to see how things are moving along.
