5 Dinner Experiences I Want to Have Before I Die (According to Rainn Wilson)

Tell Rainn all about the dinner experience you want to have before you die and win an autographed copy of his new book, SoulPancake, plus a Le Creuset cookware set worth $400!

Hi there, Nesties. Rainn here.

Shameless plug: I’ve written a great new big think book, SoulPancake: Chew on Life’s Big Questions. You should get yourself one. It will look great on your coffee table. Trust me.

The book is full of cool questions and challenges like “If you only had one hour left to live, how would you spend it?” Or “What is the purpose of your life?” In the spirit of this, I’ve put together my list of five dinner experiences I want to have before I die.

Here goes.

Meal #1
On the menu: Grilled Pizza With Pepperoni and Mushrooms
Who’s chewing? My 6-year-old son
What are we chewing on?
How challenging it is to be a dad, and how lucky I am to be his. He'll tell me that grasshoppers have ears on their feet. (Who knew?!) And then I’ll play the guitar while he sings every word to “Hard Days Night.” He loves The Beatles more than anything else in the universe and is definitely my progeny.

Meal #2
On the menu: Sesame Noodles with Tofu Steaks and Baby Asian Greens
Who’s chewing? Thom Yorke
What are we chewing on?
How impressed he is with my massive collection of Radiohead albums and minutia. We’ll talk about art, creativity, his new Atoms for Peace band, the power of music, and his creative process. Then I'll play the drums for him, and he'll be so blown away by my talent, he'll invite me to tour with them! Possibly to join the band, move to England, etc. It would be f'awesome.

Meal #3
On the menu: Herbed Chèvre Steaks
Who’s chewing? My dog, Barry
What are we chewing on?
The value of silence, of course. That furry, enormous pit bull has seen me at my best and my worst. He’s loyal and forgiving and awesome. Even if he does drool worse than Mickey Rourke.

Meal #4
On the menu: Cornmeal Pancakes with Fresh Blueberry Sauce
Who’s chewing? Oprah Winfrey
What are we chewing on?
Race, gender, power, life. I'll show her how the SoulPancake book covers it all. She'll salivate over every page and then proclaim how she’s never had me on the show and what a BIG mistake that was on her part. She'll give me a brand new car and the keys to her jet.

Meal #5
On the menu: Coffee-Toffee Granita
Who’s chewing? Coleman Barks
What are we chewing on?
As the world’s foremost expert on the ancient poet Rumi, Barks and I will talk about poetry, language, beauty, and love. He'll dedicate a 3 a.m. poem to me. I'll be all like, “Hey, that's inappropriate," and we'll laugh and laugh and laugh.
