Q.
My friend yells at her husband in front of us. Is there anything I can say?
A.
It’s often more common to think of a man as the harsh one in a relationship, and if that were the situation (especially if it happens often), your initial reaction would be to stop and make sure that your friend is okay. This isn’t any different. When your girlfriend is verbally abusing her man, let her know that her behavior bothers you. Instead of saying, “You shouldn’t speak to him like that,” choose a time when you’re away from everyone else and say, “I understand that you’re angry with him, but I feel uncomfortable when you talk to him that way.” It might open her eyes to her own behavior, or at the very least, get her to stop doing it in front of you.
