Q.
A coworker suggested that if I truly loved my husband, I’d have taken his last name. How do I respond
A.
Resist saying, “I suppose if your husband truly loved you, he’d have taken yours.” Instead, shrug and say, “Different things are important to different people. My husband couldn’t have cared less—though he did make me solemnly swear that I wouldn’t choose pink and purple for our bedroom colors.” By responding with humor, you’ll diffuse tension and help your coworker regain perspective.
