The Nest Q&A

My in-laws hint that they aren’t financially prepared for retirement, and I think they expect us to help! What do we do? CALIGIRL54

First, stop speculating—it’s possible they aren’t hinting at all. But your spouse should bring it up. If he’s nervous, he can invent a “friend.” As in: “My friend’s parents can’t afford to retire. Hearing that made me realize I know nothing about your plans.” Then…listen. Maybe they’ve exaggerated the problem. But if their coffers really are empty, bring in a financial planner who can create a battle plan (think: second jobs or big budget cuts) to help them save themselves.
