Top 13 Pregnancy Myths -- Busted!

Do this. Don't do that. With all the pregnancy advice out there, it's hard to know what to believe -- or whom to believe. But remember, every pregnancy is different, so follow your doctor's orders above all else.

Myth 1: Eat Three Healthy Meals a Day
False! You should be eating six or seven small meals every two to three hours. "Eating frequently and from various food groups will keep your blood sugar in a constant range, which is healthy for you and your baby," says Stuart Fischbein, MD, coauthor of Fearless Pregnancy.

Myth 2: You Can Drink Alcohol
True! If you want to toast your sister at her wedding with a glass of bubbly, "go ahead," says Mary Jane Minkin, MD, a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Yale University School of Medicine and coauthor of A Woman's Guide to Sexual Health. "One glass of wine isn't going to hurt the baby," she says. But one glass here and there doesn't mean nine -- in fact, two or more alcoholic drinks daily can lead to fetal alcohol syndrome. So while it's best to cut out alcohol completely, Dr. Minkin says that an occasional small glass of wine with your pasta primavera is harmless.

Myth 3: Decaf Only
False! One small cup of coffee a day is perfectly fine. While a recent study at McGill University in Montreal did find that the caffeine in two to three cups of coffee a day increases the risk of miscarriage, it didn't consider how the coffee was brewed and the type of coffee used. Dr. Minkin points out that a French blend served black is much stronger than a weak cup of American coffee mixed with milk. It's another controversial subject for sure, but moderate caffeine intake isn't likely to harm you or your baby. The same goes for sodas with a caffeine jolt.

It is NOT safe to drink ANY amount of alcohol during pregnancy. Each woman's metabolism is different, as well as each fetus. There is no amount of alcohol that is known to be "safe" during pregnancy. Any amount could cause a Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. I would hate for a pregnant woman to read this and be falsely reassured that drinking is ok. It is NOT!! Please protect your growing baby from alcohol exposure. It is the #1 preventable birth defect.

by KCWood on Jun 26, 2010

Completely agree with you KCWood. I am a nursing student and this is what the research is saying; there is no known safe amount of alcohol during pregnancy.

by richelle622 on Jun 30, 2010

I totally agree! I can't believe they would even put that on here. I mean I know it says one small glass a day wouldn't hurt, but nobody really knows that for sure. So why would anybody risk it?! It isn't a 100% proven fact.

by Ardmhs83 on Jul 13, 2010

I believe popular opinion falls on both sides of the argument. http://www.sheknows.com/articles/807393/drinking-alcohol-while-pregnant-safe-or-risky

by Da0419 on Aug 23, 2010

I completely agree with KCWood. I am an OB nurse and we tell moms absolutely no alcohol

by csmcpherson2010 on Sep 04, 2010

In Britain, it is completely normal for pregnant women to be allowed to have a drink occasionally... it is only puritanical America that is so anti-alcohol..

by AriaGoose on Sep 07, 2010

All of these myths are discussed in the book that came out last year completely dedicated to pregnancy myths and superstitions. "Hands Off My Belly! The Pregnant Woman's Survival Guide to Myths, Mothers, and Moods" has won two awards and it is currently found on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. If you think these 9 myths are fun then check out the hundreds of others we discuss in the book

by DrTass on Sep 09, 2010

I'm an OB/L&D/Nursery nurse as well. It's all about moderation ladies. An occasional glass of wine is not going to do harm to your fetus. There hasn't been extensive studies done to see the affects of drinking a glass or two a day. I wouldn't suggest drinking that often but if it's for a special occasion such as a wedding a glass of bubbly, as stated above, will not do harm...common sense girls.

by LeilaniBlose on Sep 16, 2010

I don't think it's ok to drink ANY alcohol while you are pregnsnt, why risk it? I work with children who have fetal alcohol syndrome and it's so sad to see these children struggling everyday to do simple things when what they have could have been prevented. Please don't drink at all if you are pregnant!

by circes on Sep 22, 2010

My grandfather and three of my uncles are all family doctors who do hundreds of home and hospital births. All of them read studies constantly and know their stuff. All of them concur that alcohol in moderation is perfectly safe, and certain types can even be beneficial (e.g., red wine for antioxidants) in small amounts. It is important to note that "in moderation" means under 5 or so drinks a week. Yes, every woman is different, but any adult who drinks responsibly in the first place will be responsible during pregnancy. The problem is that many women in our society (especially very young mothers), do not drink safely, so doctors feel obligated to tell them not to drink at all, perpetuating the "any amount is harmful" myth.

by mesmillie on Oct 03, 2010

with my first child i ate and drink everything ofcourse not alcohol but i meant juice and soda...and she turns out fine! healthy...so healthy you can't even notice that i was on a diet or not! You know what it just depend on certain people and certain babys...everyone is different.

by lilylee9020 on Oct 04, 2010

I agree, this list is quite misleading. Some hair coloring products have chemicals in them KNOWN to cause birth defects- why risk that for vanity? Mesmillie is correct that a glass of red wine a night is healthy for an adult- my father's doctor recommended he drink a beer a night even- but the problem is that no one knows when it becomes harmful to a fetus. Hopefully everyone can agree that at some point it does! I for one would rather not guess at how much alcohol I could drink before I caused harm to my baby, because that is all you CAN do- guess! I am glad they included myth 5 though- I think many pregnant women are told to eat eat eat! :)

by Redsky on Oct 23, 2010

about the alcohol thing. Drinking a small amount may or may not harm the fetus, but NOT drinking definitely won't! So why risk it? If someone can't go 9 months without having a drink, they have a drinking problem and shouldn't be getting pregnant.

by G13 on Nov 21, 2010

Another topic not mentioned in this list is the tanning bed. I have a friend who's doctor apparently told her that getting in the tanning bed would not hurt the baby, as long as she didn't tan for more than 10 mins/day. I wouldn't think tanning would be safe for a fetus, I mean it does increase your risk of skin cancer for us, and we're all grown up. Has anyone heard of anyone else tanning while prego? It just doesn't seem safe to me.

by BethH2010 on Dec 04, 2010

I'm definitely not worried either way. I may have a glass of champagne on an occasion - but that doesn't mean that I'm a bad mother/wife/person. As with everything - its ultimately the person's decision, be it good or bad.

by PhoebeJones3 on Dec 07, 2010

It is not ok to take Tums while pregnant. My doctor had to change my previous heartburn meds and specifically told me that even tums were unsafe for pregnant women.

by cloud9brenda on Dec 07, 2010

As far as drinking while pregnant, why would you take the risk? It's unecessary. It is quite possible to join a wedding toast or enjoy a pasta dinner without alcohol. There are so many disorders children and families deal with that have no known cause and are no one's fault. However, fetal alcohol syndrome is 100% preventable and has one cause... the mother consumed alcohol. True, we don't know how much it takes to do damage, but why risk even a little? If you were driving in a car, you would put your baby in a car seat, no matter how small the distance. Sure in a few miles, you probably wouldn't have an accident but you don't know that for sure, so you put your baby in a car seat. Why wouldn't you take the same caution when it comes to drinking while pregnant?

by jalapeno08 on Jan 18, 2011

I hate the blanket statement that OTC drugs are safe!! As a PA student i have been finding out all kinds of things about meds for preg or otherwise. Most OTC are just watered down versions of prescription meds, so they can have the same side-effects and interactions. The ONLY safe (class B) drug for Headaches etc, is Tylenol (and it doesn't help inflammation). Most others are class C or higher. Long and short be careful, check the drug class while preg and lactating. The fewer drugs the better!

by ChristinaLynch1226 on Feb 21, 2011

cloud9brenda- Not true. My dr actually recommends taking Tums as a calcium supplement while pregnant.

by Soon2BMrsSikes on Feb 22, 2011

I agree, it's not going to kill you to stay away from alcohol for 9 months to assure that you will have a healthy baby.

by VonHoff on Feb 23, 2011

If a woman can't go 9 months without drinking, she's got a real issue with alcohol...

by mrsoff2sleep on Feb 23, 2011

Really? Do some of you think the Bump didn't do accurate research before publishing this article? Everyone has their own opinion, but it doesn't make it right or wrong. These comments remind me of the First Trimester board....

by Mrs.Keith2B on Feb 23, 2011

Wow. Just...wow. I am shocked that so many commentors are so vehement against a pregnant woman having a sip of bubbly at a special occasion! Goodness gracious. I am in no way saying that I think it's okay for a pregnant woman to consume alcohol daily, but I would not condemn her for taking a sip of champagne during a toast. You know, it's about being a responsible, educated, unselfish human being...being pregnant is remembering that there is a life inside you that needs to be protected and nurtured. I have seen women who think that they cannot have a single sip of alcohol, yet they're taking a class C or higher drug every day! And I've seen the results. The point is...moderation, and hopefully if you're pregnant, you don't want to take the risk...but a sip or two of champagne once or twice during the entire span of your pregnancy, I wouldn't call that a high risk. I would say being stressed out and paranoid during your pregnancy about everything you do would put you at an even HIGHER risk.

by andreapandrea3 on Feb 23, 2011

Not going to weigh in on the alcohol debate, but if it's a Myth that you CAN drink alchohol, shouldn't it be false? I'd just like to point out the poor editing. It should either say "Myth, you CAN'T drink alcohol" and the answer should be false. In fact, the very nature that they are declaring these items as myths means the answer should be false.

by KNiemi on Feb 23, 2011

While this is a racy, dangerous even topic to post as it can be misinterperted soooooo many ways. But this info is out there everywhere and many Dr's agree occasional small glass of wine is ok during pregnancy. Few key words here; OCCASIONAL, SMALL, WINE. Occasional = once a few months or only special event, small wine glass = 2-4 ounces, wine DOES NOT = a strong margarita or a vodka shot. Common sense just isn't common enough these days.

by pinksummer83 on Apr 02, 2011

I think some women take the no drinking too far. They make it seem as though even having a drop of alcohol is going to harm the baby. Having a bottle of wine - NO! A sip of wine - fine.

by RTEbersole on May 12, 2011

My friend was telling me that it's ok to drink while pregnant and that she did it during hers. Like a beer here and there. I said ok, But really I was thinking what the hell kind of parent are you! I would never risk that of my child. I got pregnant in February and I'll admit I had a few drink in the first few weeks because I didn't know. But once I started feeling a little off i immediately stopped doing anything that could harm the baby if there was one. I kept taking the pee tests and they all kept coming up negative until I was about 13 weeks pregnant, But I knew something was up. I'm just thankful that for the amount I drank when i didn't know that my son came out perfectly fine.

by strawberrybanana31 on May 13, 2011

I know the drinking topic has been rather hot, but it put my mind at ease. I don't have to worry about checking my chart before having a glass of wine. My concern was 'what if I am pregnant and don't know it yet, what will happen to the baby?' I don't think one glass of wine before you know you are expecting will be a big issue, I don't plan on drinking after I get a BFP, aside from Communion wine, but that is just a sip once a week, and even then I might change my mind about that.

by jacandmic@gmail.com on May 24, 2011

There are a lot of thing you are not allowed to do while being pregnant, but the list of false myths is beyond my imagination. My nephew used Anabolic Steroids when he left his wife pregnant and now their 9 years old daughter is perfectly healthy. I heard some stories that made me think: is the person that "discovered" this myth insane?

by lamontnoble on Jun 29, 2011

If you have a question about whether any drug (OTC or RX) is safe during pregnancy or for your newborn, check www.safefetus.com. Also, just because a label says "herbal" or "all-natural" does NOT mean it is safe.

by carabrian on Oct 02, 2011

Tums bad for pregnant women? (stated above) Doubtful. I would have been miserable with a a Tum or two a day. I didn't know what was right or wrong when I was pregnant. I ate what I ate before pregnancy, drank what I drank (no alcohol, I don't ever hardly "drink") and my son is PERFECTLY healthy. He hasn't been sick once and no problems at all and he's over a year old now. Some of this stuff is just that, "stuff".

Actually, a comprehensive study states that the children of LIGHT drinkers actually have less behavioral problems, and had better cognitive function than those who completely abstain. http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,2023984,00.html

NO ALCOHOL EVER when pregnant. This is crazy. Your baby shares your blood!! And it takes them longer to metabolize what's there so, according to "What to Expect when You're Expecting" "when you're just barely feeling tipsy, your baby may be close to passing out." Don't be stupid and whoever has the power to do so needs to be responsible and take this article down.

To the poster who said that the only etiology of FAS was mom drinking while pregnant. False! If you have sex, after your man has been drinking, he's got damaged sperm for a few days. So if you happen to conceive with damaged sperm...possibilities of FAS. Alcohol interrupts his sperm making processes. Damages the little guys. So, if you're TRYING to conceive, its actually best for neither of you to drink.
