Getting Pregnant Q&A: Does Irregular Periods Mean Trouble Getting Pregnant?

Q.

I had irregular periods before starting birth control- does this mean i'll have a hard time getting pregnant?

A.

Dr. Chang says: Women who have irregular periods may experience difficulty getting pregnant because they might not be ovulating on a regular basis. Although vaginal bleeding may be regulated on the pill, this doesn't actually address the underlying cause of your irregularity. If your irregular cycles recur after discontinuing the pill, scheduel an appointment with a gynecologist or contact a reproductive endocrinologist, who can advise you on what treatment, if any, is needed to help you ovulate and become pregnant.
