Maybe it's because I'm a convicted blabbermouth who couldn't keep a hat on personal news like this if my life depended on it, but there's something about secret weddings that just gets me all misty-eyed and sniffly. I see them as the ultimate in romance. I mean, what's more romantic than trading heartfelt vows in private? Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz just did it (their children from previous relationships were the only witnesses), and I have to say, hats off, you two! It isn't easy to pull off something like that when the paparazzi are trailing you all over the planet.
I come from a big, nosy family who LOVES to get all up in each other's business. That's why I was so impressed when my Aunt Mary was able to pull off this very same thing. But unlike Craig and Weisz, Aunt Mary kept her secret for YEARS. Here's how it all went down: My grandmother was nagging her (as was her way) about marrying her longtime boyfriend, Peter. They'd been together for something like 10 years at this point. I guess Granny just wasn't dropping the subject, and Mary was getting a bit exasperated. So finally, she blurted out, "Okay, okay, I confess: Peter and I secretly got married five years ago!" Granny was speechless...but thrilled. The rest of the family? Honey, we were in awe. I mean, how did she manage to keep something so big to herself for so long? I thought it was amazing. And totally romantic. Now, don't get me wrong, I loved my big, social wedding. But I think elopements and private ceremonies are to die for.
Do you guys love secret weddings? Did any of you pull one off?
