We rent movies instead of going to the movie. We can watch 6 monvies a month for less than the price of 1 movie ticket.

by amandabc28 on Apr 30, 2009

Stock up on your grocery store favorites when they are on sale. Search the ad papers or your grocery store's website for deals that week. I love the Buy One Get One Free deals. You can really save for just a little but of effort.

by jujub0423@yahoo.com on May 04, 2009

YES! Dave Ramsey is awesome! He also has a radio talk-show that's fabulous...we've learned a lot listening to him.

by keelys521 on May 13, 2009

CVS has some great deals - as long as you only buy what you need. I just got a $25 giftcard for filling my prenatal vitamins there, and $10 CVS bucks for buying my Aveeno shampoo and conditioner, and lotion at the same time.

by dogmommy4now on May 15, 2009

We are currently in Dave ramsey's Classes! love them! they are helping us out so much, its changed how we handle our money.

by elfsgirl08 on Jun 03, 2009

i've started clipping coupons. they send some of the sunday paper coupons in the tuesday mail so i wait for them and also found the website coupons.com is great. it's free and all you have to do is look, mark the ones you'll use, then on the last page click 'print clipped' and it sends the coupons right to your printer. i then go to the grocery store on double coupon day. save us quite a bit. we go to BJ's to get meat and staple items. the great thing is they take coupons from the paper and websites.

by katiescarlet1220 on Jul 05, 2009

My husband and I start Dave Ramseys class in September and Im SOOOO excited about it. I also just cancelled my home phone today and saved $300 for the year just by making a phone call.

by sheilamaude24@yahoo.com on Jul 29, 2009

We rent movies at Redbox instead of a movie store and it saves you about $4 a movie (depending on how long you keep the movie). We also have the Dave Ramsey kit and are about to start taking classes.

Check out EZ Meals. You pay $30 for 6 months and each week you get 5 dinner recipes along with a shopping list. You get to pick the store you shop from and they base the meals on what is on sale at that particular store for that week. My mom gave me this as a gift when I got married and I just started using it and love it! You don't have to plan meals every night because they are planned for you and it saves you money on your grocery bill every week!

by lirby711@gmail.com on Aug 18, 2009

I've recently read that most grocery stores put each item on sale once about every 12 weeks. When you find something that's on sale, stock up for the next three months and avoid paying normal price each time you go shopping.

by alliecatn1 on Aug 20, 2009

we have increased our recycling... even had my son canvass the nieghbourhood for other peoples recycling, we average 75 dollars a month cash in our pockets..... and a lot less plastic and glass in the dump!

by Cynthia-Raven on Sep 29, 2009

The biggest saver for us: Not eating out. We get smart when we shop, and buy items that can be used multiple times and used in many different kinds of dishes :) We treat ourselves every now and then to something special, but we've found we can cook food that's even better than what we eat out! Also, we got a Netflix account. My husband and I both love movies, and instead of paying $14 each for a night out, we enjoy watching movies instantly online or having them shipped to our place.

by msjbear on Oct 16, 2009

I sorted out my quarters from the rest of my change and everyday I would stick a few dollars from my tips in there as well. Imagine my surprise when I opened the container at the end of the month and found almost $100.

by cinderellabride81 on Oct 17, 2009

We invested in OOMA, a VOIP system. Works like Vonage, but you just pay for the unit with no monthly bill. We tried the no cell phone route, but the reception in our area is not that reliable. We can call family members all over the country with no charge.

by sarahdtobe on Oct 19, 2009

We sat down with our budget and realized we were WAY overspending on quick trips to Target, Walgreens, etc. $10 here and $15 there can really add up! Also, by sticking to a strict budget, we realized we could just live on my salary and use his to pay off debt and save for a house!

by amanda.beth on Oct 21, 2009

We've started going to the Dollar Theater instead of the regular movie theater. It's a lot cheaper than renting a movie too.

It pays to do your comparison shopping online first. I've gotten great deals on our reception favors, paper for our invitations and even my wedding gown (bridalonlinestore.com). Most sites offer free shipping and handling and no tax if your order is a minimum amount. JAAH10

Things we do to save money: shop at Sam's for certain food items & health/beauty products, shop at Trader Joe's - healthy options at great prices!, cook at home more than eating out,use Redbox to rent movies & go to the "cheaper" theater when we do want to go to the movies, and we have cut down on "sweets" & junk food which is better for our wallets & waistlines! :)

by Heather&Ben on Nov 23, 2009

coupons! i saw a lady at target get $60 worth of groceries for like $7. an extreme example but i have definitely saved money since clipping. we spent i think $30 to get just the sunday paper for the year and it has definitely been well worth it.

by lwebb787 on Nov 30, 2009

We are movie buffs so we do Netflix and it saves a ton! Also, Kroger does a lot of ten for $10 deals and you can really save on things we use every week.

by absmcm on Dec 01, 2009

Do a little trial-and-error to find out which of your everyday products you can downsize to generic. A few I have stumbled on are off-brand laundry and dishwasher detergent, paper towels and TP. Simply switching to off-brands has saved me at least $30 a month. Watch for cheapie versions of your favorite beauty products too, half of the time the really inexpensive cosmetics like eyeshadow and blush look just as good as the pricey stuff, and even popular drugstore brands! I found an awesome 8-color eyeshadow pallete for $5 at KMart, and it's all the eyeshadow I'll need to buy for a few months!

by lnzylou on Dec 02, 2009

We are doing the whole Dave Ramsey thing now...I do suggest it to anyone who has more than one debt. Also, rent movies is a good one, and for fun stuff look online for your areas free things to do for entertainment, don't eat out all the time, for lunch bring last nights dinner left overs, also don't over spend on clothes wear them out until that debt is paid off, don't use a credit card for anything it adds up to quickly, don't over buy on grocery's plan out your weekly dinner meals, and invite friends and family over instead of going out. Also working out can be entertaining take a walk, jog, hike, bike, roller blade, and go camping instead of extravagant vacations.

by beu4me06 on Dec 15, 2009

I think this may work only if you're in a bigger city; but my husband I got rid of cable and now have a digital antenna. We have HD quality, get all the major networks (ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox) and several other random channels. With the internet you can pretty much watch any show after its aired. We also get Netflix, so we don't really feel deprived.

by kellyking86 on Dec 17, 2009

cut down on Starbucks! :( Unfortunately, that was hard for me, but you have to do what you have to do. :)

by daisyh3115 on Dec 25, 2009

My new husband just got a job, so we're going to be a 2-income family now. However, we've decided to still live on just mine so we can save all of his for various goals (house, baby, retirement). Once you get used to spending on two incomes, it seems like it would be really hard if you ever had to go back to just one!

by starmekitten on Dec 29, 2009

We check out movies at our local library, they have a huge collection and if they don't have it they will see if other libraries in the area have it and deliver it to our library.

by MrsSkenandore on Dec 31, 2009

Use coupons for things that are on sale that you use and take advantage of stores that double or even triple your coupons.

by stephanielp on Jan 06, 2010

My husband and I decided to not get cable. We have Netflix and watch a lot of movies through the "Instant" feature and watch our favorite tv shows together through Hulu.com. We only pay for internet and we're probably saving close to $100+ a month doing this. We find we spend more time together. It's great! And we're both reading a lot more books too! (that we purchase at places like garage sales, used books stores, Goodwill or through sellers on Amazon or get from the library--another way we save money!

We use the Walgreens Brand for most basic toiletries and house hold items. They are 100% guaranteed and they are just as good as the brand name. They also give a $25 check to use in the store when you transfer your prescription...its totally worth checking out and I save $75-$100 on household stuff!

by krissymac09 on Jan 13, 2010

My husband and I are hardly ever home, we watch an average of 3 hrs of tv a week. so we cancelled our tv service got netflix and are saving $100.00 a month. plus we can still watch our shows on the internet!

by daniellelavoise on Jan 15, 2010

Dave Ramsey is awesome! Netflixs is great! Kroger and HEB have great deals 10 for 10$ alot of the time.\

Anytime meat is onsale at the store I buy the biggest package, take it home and divvy it up into ziploc bags and stick them in the freezer. You can save tons!!

by ccarthel on Feb 03, 2010

I've taken to posting college papers and 350-word articles to Associated Content: they'll pay you for articles they like, plus you earn $1.50 on every 1,000 page views you receive.

by Stellae04 on Feb 15, 2010

If your recipe only calls for a cup or so of vegetables try getting the veggie that you need from the salad bar at your grocery store. I usually only end up spending around $1 and don't end up wasting any food. Only buy what you need and save money doing so :)

by phojmivx on Feb 16, 2010

On the thought of movie rentals, Netflix is way cheaper then just renting 3 movies a month from Blockbuster, or one trip to the theater. If you have all three services from Optimum, you get free movie tickets every Tuesday. And we like to invite our friends over for drinks, since you can usually buy an entire bottle of liquor for the cost of two or three drinks out.

by chibimeeko on Feb 22, 2010

One fun way to save some money and not feel deprived with your movie and book selection is to check out paperbackswap.com and swapadvd.com. You post books and movies that you are done with; other people request those; you pay ~$2 to mail them; you get a credit in return that you can use to request a book/movie from someone else; and then they pay to mail it to you! I've been using them for several months now, and it's great. I get to exchange movies and books I no longer want for new ones :)

by jolynn326 on Feb 24, 2010

Yes, Dave Ramsey!!!

by kristipip5 on Mar 01, 2010

I've saved a ton of money on my monthyly prescriptions by using a mail-order service. I get 3 months of medicine for the price of 1 month. It is through my health insurance company, and it is totally worth looking into.

by spiffyabigail on May 14, 2010

We have lived cable-free for 2+ years now. We use our internet for all of our entertainment. We also subscribed to Netflix, which has plenty to offer. If you are spending more than 2 hours a day in front of your television, you are probably wasting time that you could be using to get creative and earn some money.

by adnama43 on May 17, 2010

Netflix is a great way to save. For $8.99 a month, we get about 4 movies a month and the streaming capabilities, which allows us unlimited access to the instant movies/shows in the database. We also enjoy going out for dinner, but it obviously gets expensive. We now try to make date night Fridays during happy hour time. There are usually appetizer/drink specials, so for $15 bucks, we have a great night out!

by bethanys121 on May 18, 2010

Alice.com. Some of the stuff on there isn't any cheaper then retail, but alot of it is. It's really awesome and helpful for cleaning supplies and bathroom stuff!

by ezer on May 30, 2010

when we were engaged we would take our change and put it in gallon water jugs... we were engaged for almost a year and we ended up saving $500!!! its a good way to save for a vacation or christmas money. we are going to keep it up to start a cd for the kid college fund.

by BaCk_WoOdS_bRiDe on Jun 14, 2010

Register Rewards from Walgreens, buy an item (with a coupon too) and get a "reward" to spend the next time you come in to Walgreens. It's like getting items for free!

by lvsquared on Jun 14, 2010

who is Dave Ramsey?

by KDNnJDT on Jun 14, 2010

I love the TJ idea. I get ahold of some "Two buck chuck" and that does it for me. DH actually has cut down buying beer. That should save us about $300 a month right there.

by jadeorchid21 on Jun 18, 2010

YES! Listen to Dave Ramsey...he will change the way you think regarding finances. Try Financial Peace University that he offers...no one says it better than Dave!

by kimid on Jun 21, 2010

We canceled our cable and home phone, switching to our cell phones and keeping only our internet hooked up. We now watch all of our favorite shows a day later from Hulu or the network's website for FREE and get all of our movies from Netflix, which is only about 4 dollars a month. We've saved an extra $150 a month.

by NMMillan on Jul 03, 2010

When we were wondering where all our money was going, I created an Excel workbook to chart our monthly bills and spending. We were SHOCKED to learn how much frivolous spending we'd been doing. Just seeing it changed our approach to our spending habits.

by StephanieGarcia on Sep 10, 2010

Go to Uptown Cheapskate for designer clothes at low, low prices. I got a $300.00 Bebe jacket for $30.00. The store is amazing.

by shamy777 on Sep 19, 2010

Netflicks is great, or blockbuster's $10 for a month of unlimited favorites keeps us busy! Also check out the dollar store for things like toothpaste (same Crest brand-name I'd buy anywhere else), Canvas, cleaning supplies, pretty close to anything you'd need. Also check out your local thrift stores... check often, and you're bound to find tons of great stuff! Just with anything else used, make sure to wash it first.

by blackbirdsing on Jan 25, 2011

We plan meals while flipping through weekly flyers. We eat whatever happens to be on sale that week...

by blackbirdsing on Jan 25, 2011

Get a slow-cooker. It's great for couples who are short on cash or time because you can use dried beans and rice rather than canned beans to create delicious soups. Also, a slow-cooker makes tougher cuts of meat (which are much cheaper) tender and delicious. One tip: always sear your meat before throwing it into the slow-cooker to hold the juices in.

by AranelEngaged on Apr 29, 2011

I clip coupons and always try to match the coupon with a sale. We also use the grocery ads to plan our meals for the week and only buy what's on sale. A lot of grocery stores in our area do 10 items for $10 mix and match so I stock us up on our favorite food/treats.

by rotella on Aug 05, 2011

I just discoved SwagBucks. I've already gotten $10 to spend at Amazon :) yay!

by mrslucas0610 on Sep 12, 2011

Get in the habit of paying yourself first. If you get your pay by direct deposit, have your account set up to automatically transfer a set amount into a savings account right away. Even a small mount of $20 is $520 a year. $100 is $2600 (basied on 26 pay weeks a year or bi-weekly). If you do it right away, you wont notice it as much and you can quickly adjust. Especally if you are they type who jsut checks the debit account balance to see what you can spend. Paying yourself first allows you to have your savings set up and protects it from those impulsive buys. Also try not to have your savings account set up on your debit account. Many banks offer free higher interest online savings accounts that aloows you to earn more interest and limits accesss from an ATM. Personally I did this all through University and after 5 years I had saved over $13000 plus interest!
