The Nest Q&A

My husband owes a ton on his student loans, but I have good credit. Will his debt hurt us as we look to get a mortgage?

A.

Most banks view student loans as "good debt," since more education increases the chances of higher earnings down the road. Just make sure your husband has no outstanding credit card debt, and have him check his credit score online at AnnualCreditReport.com so you can both keep tabs on it. As long as he has been paying his loans on time each month, he doesn't have credit card debt and all of his accounts are up to date, you should be fine. You can also just apply on your own if you make enough to qualify.
