In my office, all the women with kids slip out at 5 p.m. on the dot, but the childless stay late. Hey, I have a life too! Is it okay to sometimes work the mom hours so I can spend time with my guy?
"Sometimes" is the key word here. If you get your job done, there's no problem with occasionally ducking out early to attend to personal stuff (from getting your hair highlighted to meeting your guy for after-work drinks). But it may be a risky career move to routinely clock short days-- for all you know, the moms have a special arrangement that lets them put in fewer hours for less dough. "It will seem less unfair if you focus on the good karma you're racking up," says Tori Gebbie of New York. "I'm okay with working longer hours than the moms now, because when I have kids, I hope somebody will back me up too."
