Be the Most Popular People on Your Block

Go Outside

If you have a dog, walk it. If you don’t have a dog, schedule regular jogs, walks, or biking rounds as part of your daily routine. “Doing so early in the morning or in the evening puts you in contact with neighbors,” says Jeanne Hurlbert, PhD, professor of sociology at Louisiana State University. This is a great way to casually bump into people. Over time, you’ll eventually build up a rapport.

Join Town Associations

It might be PTA, it might be a planning committee, it might even be a local book group. You can contact your town hall to see what kinds of activities are available and who you have to call to sign up. If you live in a large city, you can check out event postings in the local alternative weekly newspaper or on your local craigslist.org events page.

Hit the Local Gym

Not only will you be able to exercise so you can burn off all that new-home and move stress, but joining a gym is also a great way to meet whoever’s in town. In order to get maximum meeting time, sign up for a class on the weekend. This will give you plenty of opportunities to chat with others in the area.

House Crawl

Once you at least know the first names of some of your neighbors, suggest a house crawl where everyone goes from home to home for a different cocktail and snack at each house. People will get to see your home, you can ask for decorating ideas and tips, and, if you’re renovating, you can find out key contractor names from those who have had work done on their homes.

I was having trouble meeting new people when I first moved in. A few months later, DH and I got a puppy! You'd be amazed how many more people are willing to stop and chat when you're with a furry friend! And owning a dog automatically brings you into a community of other dog-owners... gives you something to talk about to break the ice!

I love our block! Twice a year all of the neighbors on our block get together for a Neighborhood Holiday Stroll (4th of July & Christmas-time). Three homes are designated "host houses" and we bring appetizers to the first house. Stay an hour then move onto dinner at the second house - stay an hour and finally desserts at the last house - until they kick us out!! Our gatherings have gone well into the wee hours of the morning and we've made great friends with our neighbors. I absolutely love it!

wow...that sounds like the perfect neighborhood! DH and I can't even decide on a specific place to live in. we met online, he's from the midwest, and i'm from the northeast..all my family is here :( and he's simply trying to escape from his family. we both hate the cold. he wants Key West, but I feel guilty about leaving my family in the east coast even though they can be a handful (they mean well, in an intrusive kind of way)..what should I do?

sgrangel03 - we are putting an offer on our first home tomorrow morning and we live in the midwest... i'm not sure where your DH is from, but we have found that in the town we live in, there is typically twice the house for the amount of money. Our winters here aren't much worse than yours are... and our Autumn is beautiful.. maybe give the midwest a try - just a different part of it. I grew up in the South.. and I love where we are now!

I love the idea of a house crawl. I think that people enjoy their neighbourhoods much more once they get to know their neighbours. I went to an event at a friends house last summer where the neighbours got together at one person's home for a pot luck BBQ and then some of the older members of the community shared stories about the original owners of some of the houses that people now lived in. What a way to pass on community memories. It was great!

@sqrangel03 - i met my hubby online too :D In Jamaica, they are building alot of gated communites with security guards at the entrances. I like this option and DH and i have actually actually decided we want to purchase one of these homes later this year. I wish we could purchase it now but we are clearing off all our debts first before we start paying a mortgage. As for the house crawl, i love the idea. i will definately introduce it to my neighbours when we buy the house :)
