Just Moved: Lindsay & John

How much does it cost to land your very own home in this neighborhood? One couple gives us the lowdown -- and a sneak peek at their new place.

Location: Fife, WA (near Tacoma)

Setup: 3 Bedrooms, 2.5 baths (laundry room upstairs and den downstairs)

Style: Traditional

Square Feet: 2,700

Price Paid: $240,000 (bank-owned)

The Deal: $89/sq. ft.

What do you love most about your home? “Because it was a bank-owned home, there was enough fixing up that needed to be done that we could make it our own, but it's new enough that there were no major issues,” says Lindsay. “We love the high ceilings downstairs with the semi-open feeling. We love the master bedroom, bathroom and walk-in closet, and how much room there is to grow into. We’re newlyweds and don't have children, but we hope to stay in this home for a long time. We’ll grow into the rooms that we have closed off right now and can already picture how our bonus room will evolve from a game and theater room to a messy playroom to a teen hangout. It’s truly a blank slate for us, and we’re having so much fun decorating room by room!”

Any tips for others looking to buy a home? “We did a ton of research and looking online before we actually went out with a realtor to look. It really helped us keep an eye on the market and what was available, and helped us narrow our search greatly. The actual process of looking and making offers went relatively quickly from there,” says Lindsay. “We recommend using TheMLSonline.com, which has the most up-to-date information on homes up for sale. We also used Zillow to get a feel for the prices. Don't settle, but know what’s realistic for you. Buy below your means so you’re not as nervous going into it and your payments are manageable. Be prompt with the paperwork (and there’s a lot, especially with messy, bank-owned transactions!).”
