How many places did you look at before finding the right one?
We looked at six new housing communities and four to five different model homes within each one, so probably around 30 different places.
How long were you looking?
The process of researching and communicating with our realtor took a couple of months. But we flew out to Texas for one week and looked at homes during that time.
What was the worst part about house-hunting?
Having to prioritize our wish list, like if having two ovens is more important than cabinet space. It made us accept the fact that we can't have everything we initially wanted when we first thought about buying a new home.
What was the best part?
Envisioning ourselves living in a house we own! That was very exciting! It was a big accomplishment for us. It finally seemed like we were officially "grown up" and were starting a family together.
Was it hard to compromise and find a house you both loved?
Our tastes and styles are pretty similar, so it wasn't hard to find a house that we both loved. The decision to buy a house in Frisco was extremely tough for us though. Both of our families lived in LA, Chris lived in LA all his life, I lived in LA most of my life, and we didn't have jobs in Texas. We were pretty much dropping everything to move to Texas. It was a huge change and commitment. But we both agreed that buying a home in LA wasn’t reasonable once we saw what we could get in Texas, and Frisco was a city that fit our lifestyle. Even after we bought the house, we both still have our doubts once and awhile, but we’re so happy about moving to Frisco and finally owning our own home!
Do you have any advice for other Nesties who are house-hunting now?
Get a good realtor. My realtor was indispensable. I don't know how we would’ve made it through the process of finding and buying our home without her. She saved us a ton of time by narrowing down places for us to see. Once we made the decision to buy our house, she guided us through the entire process and was our advocate.
Find a realtor through recommendations. Since I was in LA, I actually found my realtor by asking for recommendations on the The Knot Dallas message board!
In addition to getting a good realtor, be open-minded about where you buy your house. After seeing old, tiny homes in LA for $800,000 to $1 million, we realized we didn't have to live there. We got so much more for our money and live in the kind of neighborhood we dreamed of.
Finally, take a digital camera with you when you look at houses. It’ll make it much easier to remember the house when you sit down together to talk about the pros and cons.
